Love your natural! Next month will mark 8 years since I transitioned from relaxing my hair to wearing my hair natural. Can you believe it's been 8 years and my hair is still shoulder length?!
Yep, I can't believe it either! It took a lot of trial and error to find out what worked best for my hair. In fact, I got so frustrated in the beginning when I couldn't find the right products that I almost went back to perming my hair. About 1 year into being natural, I found what I thought worked for me...SLICKED BACK PONYTAILS!! Boy was I wrong.
I was never comfortable with wearing my hair out; I hated that it was short and thick. The idea of having my hair slicked back seemed great because my curls would be seen without having the "poofy" look. This was my go to look for years and it became very damaging to my hair. The tension of pulling my hair back made my sides thin and led to a lot of breakage. I was doing all the right things and could not figure out for the life of me, why my hair was stuck at the same length. I kept up with my trims, I deep conditioned every week, and I kept my hair moisturized, so where was I going wrong??
I didn't want to believe that the only reason my hair wasn't growing was because of my everyday ponytails! After doing some research, I convinced myself that if anything, that was at least the main reason. I had to get comfortable with the "poofy" look and tell myself that it didn't make me any less beautiful. It was only then that I truly began to love my hair in its natural state and embrace the curly fro; something I should've done years ago.
Last week I did my regular wash, deep condition, and moisturize routine. Only this time I decided to do a twist out! I left the twists in for a couple of days and then rocked my curly poof for the remainder of the week. I received so many compliments on my hair that I couldn't believe I took so long to rock my fro! I'll be wearing my hair out (ponytail free) for the remainder of the year and I can't wait to see how much more my hair grows.
So if you're anything like me and you're trying to figure out how to wear your natural hair...start by loving it! We are beautiful, our hair is beautiful, and it's a must that we have that "big hair, don't care" mentality. I would love to know how you're take care of your natural hair!
